Radial Engineering has been building direct boxes in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia since 1992, including the JDI and J48, gear used on stages and in studios by acts such as Rush, U2, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Billy Joel and Paul McCartney. The PZ-DI is their active direct box for acoustic and orchestral instruments, built around a 3-position variable load selector that matches its input impedance to magnetic pickups or piezo transducers. A fully variable low-cut filter rolls off low frequencies to suit anything from acoustic bass to violin or banjo, and a switchable high-cut filter smooths out harshness from battery-powered preamps, with 48V phantom powering the circuit.
Highlights
- 3-position variable load selector (1 meg ohm / 220k ohm / 10 meg ohm) matches input impedance to magnetic or piezo pickups
- Ultra-high 10 meg ohm setting is designed specifically for piezo transducers to reduce harsh, squawky tone
- Fully variable low-cut filter rolls off low frequencies to suit the instrument and reduce feedback-causing resonance
- Switchable high-cut filter softens harshness from battery-powered acoustic preamps
- Optimised for orchestral instruments on a live stage
- 48V phantom powered, no batteries required
