Since fuzz was invented in the early 1960s, guitarists have gone to unusual lengths to find the perfect fuzz tone — stories include Duane Allman placing his fuzz pedal in the freezer between sessions to cool its transistors, and Roger Mayer heavily modifying Jimi Hendrix's Fuzz Faces in search of something more elusive. One trick that reliably works is running a fuzz on a dying battery, since simple fuzz circuits are extremely sensitive to supply voltage — but deliberately draining batteries to find the sweet spot isn't practical, which is why JHS built the Volture after a guitarist asked for a proper solution. The Volture sits between a power supply and a pedal, letting players precisely trim input voltage to recreate the tone of a dying battery on demand. It accepts 9, 12 or 18VDC input and outputs an adjustable voltage from 7.5VDC down to 1.25VDC, producing gated, distorted, sometimes glitchy and always sputtery fuzz tones. While developed specifically for vintage fuzz circuits, it will work with any fully analogue pedal — the LED dims in step with the voltage as it's turned down.

Highlights

• Voltage-sag device — sits between power supply and pedal to simulate a dying battery
• Accepts 9, 12 or 18VDC input; outputs an adjustable 1.25VDC to 7.5VDC
• LED brightness tracks the output voltage as it's adjusted
• Uses industry-standard 2.1mm power supply cables
• Suited to any fully analogue pedal drawing under 50mA — not for digital/logic-based pedals
