The JHS 424 Gain Stage recreates the elastic, lo-fi tone of plugging a guitar straight into a vintage 424 multi-track recorder, bringing rubbery clean tones, high headroom and smashed-out fuzz into pedal form. Multi-track recorders became well known in the '80s and '90s, giving musicians and songwriters the ability to bring songs to life from home studios; the format eventually found its way onto records including Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang, and Spoon's Gimme Fiction. Many of the vocal parts and fuzzy guitar tracks on Gimme Fiction - a major inspiration for JHS's earlier Colour Box pedal - were recorded on a vintage multi-track unit, and hearing those recordings is what set the 424 Gain Stage in motion. JHS describes this as a historically accurate recreation of the original 424 MKI circuit, using the original UPC4570 and NJM4565 op-amps and all the original controls, which JHS says is crucial to recreating the character that makes the old units sound the way they do.

Highlights

  • Historically accurate recreation of the original 424 MKI circuit, using the original UPC4570 and NJM4565 op-amps and controls
  • Volume (Master), Gain 1 (Trim) and Gain 2 (Channel) controls work together, refined further with Bass and Treble EQ
  • Offers both a 1/4" output and a balanced XLR (DI) output, which can be used simultaneously
  • Ground Lift dip switch on the side addresses hum or buzz through the XLR output
  • Silent, soft-touch switching with buffered bypass
  • Usable as a subtle gain stage or boost, a distinct overdrive voice, or pushed into full overloaded fuzz
