Boss CS-1 Compression Sustainer Pedal- Japan - August 1980 - Black Label ( NO BOX) ( Pre Owned ) 9700

The Boss CS-1 Japan is an early, sought-after vintage compressor pedal known for its "squishy" sound, unique photo coupler circuit, and a switchable treble mode for enhanced high frequencies. Introduced in 1978, it was the first in Boss's compact line, featuring simple Level and Sustain controls, but differs significantly from later CS-2 and CS-3 models which use VCAs. Identifying features of the Japanese-made version include a black "Made in Japan" label and a silver screw on the bottom.

Key Characteristics
  • Controls:
Features Level and Sustain knobs to adjust output volume and compression intensity, plus the two-position MODE switch.
  • Vintage Appeal:
The Japanese-made "black label" or "silver screw" versions are considered desirable collector's items due to their build quality and unique vintage tone.
  • Switchable Treble Mode:
A MODE switch offers two modes: "Normal" for a thicker core sound and "Treble" to boost high frequencies, providing brightness and punch.
  • Photo Coupler Circuit:
Unlike later models that used VCAs, the CS-1 uses photo couplers, resulting in a distinctively "squishy" and slow-attack sound.
  • Pioneering Compressor:
It was the first compressor pedal produced by Boss.
